Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md?
The content can be identical. AGENTS.md is an open format read by many agents; CLAUDE.md is the file Claude Code reads. Many teams keep one AGENTS.md and reference it from the other files.
Should the file be in English?
It is not required: agents understand French and Arabic. English remains the most compact and closest to command and file names. Pick the language of the team that will maintain the file.
What is the ideal length?
Short and specific: one to two pages. Every line should change the agent's behaviour. An overly long file dilutes the important rules.
Where do I put the file?
At the repository root for AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and GEMINI.md; in .cursor/rules/ for Cursor; in .github/copilot-instructions.md for Copilot. The exact file name is shown above the result.
