🛒 WooCommerce, Shopify or YouCan: which platform for your store in 2026?
🌐 Français · English · العربية
Subscriptions, fees, cash on delivery, CMI, Arabic, SEO and lock-in: an honest, sourced comparison of WooCommerce, Shopify and YouCan for selling in Morocco, the Middle East or Europe.
Disclosure. I mostly build with WooCommerce: it's the bulk of my e-commerce work. This guide isn't a sales pitch for it, though. For some profiles Shopify or YouCan is clearly the better choice, and I say so. All prices were checked on the official pages on 18 October 2026. They change often, so check them again before you decide.
1. The 30-second verdict
- You're starting out with cash on delivery (COD) in Morocco, on your own, with a small budget and little technical time → YouCan. It's built for that market, works in Arabic and French, and has a built-in delivery service.
- You're launching a premium brand that sells internationally, and your team should never have to touch anything technical → Shopify, especially if your company is in a country where Shopify Payments is available (France, the UAE, the EU…).
- You want to own your site, push SEO as far as it goes, run a large catalogue, implement specific business rules or run a three-language store → WooCommerce, provided you have solid hosting and someone in charge of maintenance.
The rest of this guide explains why, with figures.
2. Three very different models
| WooCommerce | Shopify | YouCan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A free, open-source WordPress plugin, installed on your hosting | A hosted (SaaS) platform from Canada, monthly subscription | A hosted (SaaS) platform from Morocco, monthly subscription |
| Who hosts it? | You (or your provider) | Shopify | YouCan |
| Who updates and secures it? | You | Shopify | YouCan |
| Code ownership | Full (GPL licence) | No: you rent a service | No: you rent a service |
| Home market | Worldwide | Worldwide (North America, Europe, Gulf) | Morocco and MENA: the platform claims "+400K" active stores and "+166" countries served |
The model matters more than the feature list: with SaaS you pay so you don't have to deal with the technical side; with WooCommerce you pay (in time or in a provider) for freedom.
3. Real costs (checked on 18/10/2026)
3.1 Subscriptions and fees
Shopify shows different prices depending on the country you view the page from:
| Plan | UK (official page, GBP) | UAE (official page, USD) | US (third-party sites, USD) | Fee if you don't use Shopify Payments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £25/month, or £19/month billed yearly | $32/month, or $24 yearly | $39/month, or $29 yearly | 2% |
| Grow | £65, or £49 yearly | $92, or $69 yearly | $105, or $79 yearly | 1% |
| Advanced | £344, or £259 yearly | $399, or $299 yearly | $399, or $299 yearly | 0.6% |
| Plus | from £1,800 | from $2,300 | — | 0.2% |
Two key points for Morocco:
- Shopify Payments isn't available in Morocco (or Saudi Arabia). The official list has 41 countries, including France, the EU and the UAE. A Moroccan company has to use a third-party payment provider… and pay Shopify's 2% fee (Basic plan) on top of that provider's own fees.
- On the other hand, cash on delivery isn't charged: Shopify states plainly, "You aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments", and COD is a manual payment.
YouCan (prices in dollars on the official page):
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Monthly sales / order cap | Users |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solopreneur | $29 | $290 | $50,000 / 3,500 orders | 1 |
| Starter | $49 | $490 | $100,000 / 7,000 | 3 |
| Entrepreneur | $89 | $890 | $300,000 / 21,000 | 6 |
| Premium | $187 | $1,870 | Unlimited | 19 |
On top of that come per-transaction fees, COD included: 0.5% of cash-on-delivery payments (0.25% above $5,000) and 1% of online payments (0.5% above $5,000). The page doesn't say whether that threshold is monthly, so ask before you sign up.
WooCommerce: the software is free, "with no monthly subscription" and a "0%" revenue share, according to the official page. You still pay for:
- hosting: WooCommerce puts it at $25 to $350 a month for most stores. Entry-level offers exist (Hostinger advertises its WooCommerce plan at $3.99/month… with a 48-month commitment paid upfront and renewal at $16.99/month), so always check the renewal price;
- paid extensions: $29 to $299 per year per extension on the official marketplace;
- maintenance (updates, backups, security): your time or a provider.
3.2 Apps: the hidden cost of SaaS
On Shopify and YouCan, many features come from paid apps. A concrete COD example: the quick order form EasySell COD Form (widely used on Shopify) is free up to 60 orders a month, then costs $9.95/month (440 orders), $24.95 (10,000) or $59.95 (unlimited). Stack four or five apps like that and the monthly bill can exceed the subscription itself.
On WooCommerce, the same need is often covered by a free extension or a yearly licence, but someone has to set it up and maintain it.
3.3 Worked example: year one of a small COD store in Morocco
Assumptions (adjust them to your case): one person, 150 delivered orders a month, average basket around MAD 250, 100% COD, no online payments.
| Item | WooCommerce | Shopify (Basic, UAE page) | YouCan (Solopreneur) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription | 0 | $24 × 12 = $288 | $290 |
| Fee on COD | 0 | 0 (manual payment) | 0.5% of COD collected |
| COD order form | Free or paid extension | $0 to $9.95/month depending on volume | Included (customisable checkout fields) |
| Hosting | From a few dollars to $25+/month | Included | Included |
| Maintenance | Your time or a contract | Included | Included |
| Setup | Longest | Medium | Fastest |
Takeaway: at this stage the cost gap is small. What should decide is your time, your skills and your plans for the next 2–3 years, not $20 a month.
4. Cash on delivery, online payment and delivery
In Morocco, 84.1% of online shoppers have paid on delivery (ANRT 2024–2025 survey, reported by Le360), and 43.3% have also paid by card. Your platform has to handle COD and be ready for what comes next.
| WooCommerce | Shopify | YouCan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native COD | Yes, built-in "Cash on delivery" gateway; order stays "processing" until you collect | Yes, as a manual payment, with no fee; COD sellers often add a form app | Yes, it's the core of the product (0.5% fee) |
| Order confirmation | Via extensions or third-party tools | Via apps | Built-in tools and apps; country-based IP blocking against fake orders |
| Card payments in Morocco | Possible via CMI or an aggregator, depending on the modules your bank or provider supplies | No Shopify Payments in Morocco; depends on a compatible third-party provider, plus Shopify's 2% fee (Basic) | YouCan Pay, plus cards, PayPal, Stripe depending on the account's country |
| Moroccan couriers | Courier plugins (e.g. "Sendit.ma for WooCommerce" on WordPress.org) | Courier apps (e.g. the Sendit app on the Shopify App Store) | YouCan Ship, an aggregator of local delivery companies |
About CMI: the distance-selling application goes through your bank and often takes 3 to 6 weeks. Quoted fees are around 1.5–2.5%, plus a few dirhams per transaction (agency feedback, not a public rate card). Start the process at the very beginning of the project, whatever the platform. Stripe isn't offered to companies registered in Morocco.
In Europe or the Gulf it's the other way round: Shopify Payments (France, EU, UAE) or WooCommerce's usual gateways (Stripe, PayPal…) can be switched on in a few days.
5. Arabic, RTL and multilingual
For a store in Morocco or the Middle East, this is often where the decision is made.
- WooCommerce: WordPress supports right-to-left (RTL) natively and is available in Arabic (including a Moroccan Arabic translation). For multilingual you need a plugin: Polylang Pro and Polylang for WooCommerce cost €99 excl. VAT per year each; WPML ranges from €39 to €199 (one year of support and updates). Each language gets its own URLs, which is ideal for SEO. You need a theme that handles RTL properly: test it in Arabic before you buy.
- Shopify: up to 20 languages on Basic to Advanced (30 on Plus). RTL depends on the theme: Shopify says the latest versions of its Horizon family themes support Arabic. Watch out: Arabic isn't on the list of languages for which Shopify provides checkout translations, so plan to translate or check those strings yourself.
- YouCan: the seller dashboard exists in Arabic, French and English, and the official help explains how to add store languages and translate products, categories, pages and menus. I couldn't confirm in the documentation whether each language gets separate URLs and hreflang tags: test it on a demo store if multilingual SEO matters to you.
6. SEO and performance
| Criterion | WooCommerce | Shopify | YouCan |
|---|---|---|---|
| URL control | Full (free permalinks) | Fixed structure (/products/, /collections/) | Fixed structure |
| Titles, meta, structured data | Full (theme + SEO plugin) | Good, advanced via theme or apps | The basics; less fine control |
| Blog and content | WordPress's strong suit | Decent | More limited pages and content |
| Performance | Up to you: hosting, theme, plugins | Good by default, weighed down by apps | Managed by the platform |
| Multilingual SEO (hreflang) | Yes with Polylang/WPML | Yes (URLs per language) | To be checked |
In short: WooCommerce has the highest SEO ceiling, but also the lowest floor. A badly hosted WooCommerce with 40 plugins will be slower than a standard Shopify store. A well-built WooCommerce allows content and technical SEO work that no SaaS fully allows. To see where you stand: free SEO audit and speed test.
7. Ownership, lock-in and scalability
- With SaaS, you rent. If the platform changes its prices or rules, or closes your account, you have to follow. You can export products, customers and orders (as CSV, for instance), but not the theme or the apps: migrating means rebuilding the site.
- With WooCommerce, you own. You can change host, provider or theme without asking anyone. The trade-off: security and updates are your responsibility.
- Scalability: Shopify absorbs traffic spikes without you thinking about it. WooCommerce scales too, but it needs suitable hosting and caching (hence the $25–350 a month quoted by WooCommerce). YouCan caps sales and orders per plan: compare them with your targets.
- Custom features (quantity pricing, subscriptions, marketplace, B2B, delivery rules per city, ERP integration): WooCommerce is the most flexible; Shopify relies on apps or custom app development; YouCan is the most closed.
8. Skills you need
| Task | WooCommerce | Shopify | YouCan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open the store | Install WordPress, choose hosting and theme | Create an account | Create an account |
| Add products | Easy | Easy | Easy |
| Security, backups, updates | Yours (or a provider's) | Included | Included |
| Customise the design | Theme + builder, or PHP/CSS | Theme editor, or Liquid code | Theme editor |
| Diagnose a bug | Often technical | Shopify support or app developer | YouCan support |
9. Decision table by profile
| Your profile | My advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| COD beginner in Morocco, one or two products, testing ads | YouCan | Fast, in Arabic, COD form and delivery built in; mistakes are cheap |
| COD dropshipping that works (several hundred orders a month) | YouCan or WooCommerce | Stay on YouCan if all is well; move to WooCommerce if you want your own confirmation tooling, per-city rules, or if percentage fees start to hurt |
| Premium international brand (Europe, Gulf), company in France or the UAE | Shopify | Shopify Payments available, proven checkout, team works without a developer |
| Moroccan brand also targeting the diaspora | WooCommerce or Shopify | WooCommerce for three languages and SEO; Shopify if your company is abroad and the team is non-technical |
| Large catalogue (thousands of SKUs, variants, filters) | WooCommerce (good hosting) or Shopify Grow/Advanced | WooCommerce for control over filters and URLs; Shopify if you don't want to manage infrastructure |
| Small budget but long-term (craft, cosmetics, bookshop) | WooCommerce | No subscription or commission; content and SEO become your free channel |
| Content-driven store (blog, guides, recipes, SEO) | WooCommerce | WordPress is still the most complete publishing tool |
| B2B, quotes, customer-specific pricing, ERP | WooCommerce (or Shopify Plus with a big budget) | Custom business rules |
| You never want to hear about updates | Shopify or YouCan | Maintenance is included in the subscription |
10. The mistakes I see most often
- Choosing over a $10 monthly difference. The real cost is your time and the sales lost to a slow or unreliable store.
- Comparing hosts' teaser prices without looking at renewal prices or commitment length.
- Forgetting CMI until the day before launch: 3 to 6 weeks of lead time.
- Installing an "RTL-ready" theme without testing it in Arabic: flipped icons, misaligned numbers, overflowing menus.
- Stacking apps or plugins for every small need: slowness, conflicts, bills.
- Launching in Arabic without adapting the checkout (partial translation, address fields designed for Europe, such as a mandatory postcode your COD customers may not fill in).
11. Migrating without losing everything
Whether you're moving from YouCan to WooCommerce or from WooCommerce to Shopify, the method is the same:
- Inventory: export products, categories, customers, orders, reviews and pages; list your apps or plugins and what they actually do.
- 301 redirect map: list every old URL (products, categories, pages, posts) and its new address. This is the step that protects your rankings.
- Domain: make sure the domain is registered in your name with a registrar, not "lent" by the platform.
- Pixels and tracking: reconnect Meta, TikTok, Google and your conversion events.
- Email: check the domain's SPF, DKIM and DMARC after the switch (free tool: domain checker).
- Full test: COD order, online payment, confirmation email, handover to the courier, on mobile and in Arabic.
- Switch at a quiet time, then watch Search Console for 30 days (404 errors, excluded pages).
- Keep the old store privately accessible for a few weeks in case you forgot some data.
